Finishing Activity #4 and #5 - Intro to Think Aloud!

Hello Seniors!

Today you will have the chance to test my comprehension and confidence as I tackle some of the tough/expert text you have brought to class. 

As we do this, consider all of the strategies on the checklist (See Activity #5) - and mark down everything you see me trying to do.  You will use these same techniques with a partner and then eventually by yourself.

1. Who is Wayne Westerberg and how do Wayne and Chris get along? 

2.   Local color is introduced when a writer uses regional or colorful terms to present an image of a distinct area or culture.  The terms “leather tramp” and “rubber tramp” qualify as examples of local color.  What culture do they describe, and what is the difference between rubber tramps and leather tramp?

3.Why did the author say that McCandless found a “surrogate family in Westerberg and his employees”?

1 - What would motivate someone to want to take such a risky adventure? What do you think prompted Chris to do so?

Just like Chris changed his name to Alex Supertramp - what would your new name be and why?

3 - How important are parent/child relationships and what happens if this is not fostered?

Into The Wild - Chapters 1 and 2

Hello Students!

Today we will begin our Into the Wild Journals.  Please answer the prompt(s).
We will then look at the claims.
We will read Chapters 1 and 2.  Please have these read for tomorrow.


QW:

1)  Think about your experience hiking, backpacking, and/or existing in the wild. What are the benefits of any one of these activities?

2) Think about some alternative plans you might have to beginning college immediately after high school. What might you do?  Why would you do it, and for how long could you see yourself doing that activity?

3)  Think about an experience you have had when you were alone and made some misjudgments that could have led to disaster, but didn't.  What miscalculations did you make and how did you avoid disaster?


Possible Claims:
1) Chris' idealism lead to his death.
2) Chris made choices that were foolish.
3) Chris genuinely loved the outdoors and wanted to live without the trappings of society.
4) Chris risked his life, no matter the cost, to find out who he was and that should be valued.

Welcome Seniors!

I am so glad to be back with you! This is YOUR graduation year!

There is a lot to be excited about and there is still a lot to accomplish now and in the upcoming months.  Have no doubts that you will be given tons of support and many opportunities to read, write, learn, explore, and participate.

Get out of your comfort zone - now is the time to take some risks! 
Please be present each day and keep up on your reading, writing, and related assignments.

Our semester closes in three weeks - with smart choices and an authentic work ethic you can make the needed decisions to end the semester with a grade that best represents your growth and effort.  Please take advantage of all opportunities and projects.

If you are concerned about your semester grade - please be sure to make an appointment (see Office Hours) to talk with me.  Your last minute concerns cannot be my concerns.  Advocate for yourself.
